Sunday, September 11, was Rally Day—the official kick-off for Our Savior's Christian Education program. During worship, the teachers were installed and everyone remembered their Baptisms in a special liturgy.

Emilo Rathbun (above) is standing by the new attendance chart for the Celebration Class. Our Savior's Lutheran offers camp scholarships to all students who attend Sunday school regularly throughout the year. Emilio was one of the scholarship winners this past summer and so he enjoyed a week at Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Ferryville, Wisconsin.

Over the summer, the Sunday school area was refurbished with new ceramic floor tiling. The kids love the new space, which is also decorated with banners painted by the Sunday school a few years ago.

We pray that this will be another wonderful school year of learning and growing in faith, hope and love!

FIRST COMMUNION

CONTINUING EDUCATION AT HOLDEN VILLAGE

Pastor Laura was was invited to be a part of the summer teaching staff at Holden Village this year. Holden is a unique, secluded retreat center high in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Pastor took her continuing education time and budget for 2011 to go there to teach and learn from the other teachers.

The village is very secluded. There are no roads to Holden—it used to be a mining village. You can only get there by riding several hours on a ferry up Lake Chelan. Here is Pastor with the Lady of the Lake ferry boat.

But even when you get to Lucerne, you're not there yet. At that point, you must board a Holden Village school bus, which chugs up numerous switchbacks on a gravel road, climbing over 2,000 feet in a little under 12 miles. Check out the switchback road sign.

As you ascend, there are breathtaking views of Lake Chelan.

The Gentrys stayed in this lovely mountain chalet.

There are many hiking trails from Holden. Here is the view of Hart Lake, which the Gentrys hiked to (about a 9 miles trip).

Holden was at full capacity this summer with over 400 people in the village. They gather for worship each night. Here you can see the worship space.

There happened to be a number of alumni and faculty from Luther College. They all posed together for this picture.

This is a shot from the unique worship service called "Prayer Around the Cross" in which people are invited to come forward and light a candle as a symbol of their prayer.

From July 17-23, our church musician, Tom Bourcier was the village musician.

4TH ANNUAL RIVERBOAT WORSHIP

This Sunday, June 26, will be our church's fourth annual Riverboat Worship Service. We hope you'll join us as we set sail for worship in a luxury Mississippi River Explorer Cruise boat.

We'll begin boarding at the dock at the bottom of Main Street in Lansing at 8:30 a.m. and we'll leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. The return time is around 10:30 a.m. Bottled water and ice cream novelties will be provided. You are welcome to bring additional beverages of your own. If you have any questions about this cruise, please call Pastor Laura at 563-880-2699.

Our Savior’s Lutheran congratulations Kaylee Lawson upon the birth of her son, Landon James Lawson. He arrived on Wednesday, June 15th at 6:26 p.m. He weighed 5 pounds, 8 3/4 ounces. Mom and baby are now home from Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Waukon and are both doing well. They plan to attend our Riverboat Worship service this Sunday, June 26th.

Nicole Elizabeth, daughter of Ron and Marsha Vinson, affirmed her baptism through the rite of confirmation on Pentecost Sunday. She is pictured with Pastor Laura Gentry above.

Below is her personally written faith statement, which she read to the congregation during worship.

My name is Nicole Vinson. I am 13 years old. I am active in sports such as: volleyball, softball, and track and I love spending time with my family and friends, I am a fun and outgoing person.

I have been involved with Our Savior’s Lutheran Church since my baptism here in 1997. I have done many things here such as: Christmas pageants, children’s choir, Sunday school, and confirmation. Since I have been in confirmation, I have learned to acolyte and assist with Holy Communion. I look forward also to receiving my first Communion today.

I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. This means that God spoke to many people who wrote it down for us. Reading it is helping me to understand God and what he wants for my life. My Spark Bible for kids helps me to understand more about each book. Thank you for giving me this bible. I will continue to read it.

I believe that God the Father created the world and everything in it. I feel like he is someone I can turn to when I am having a bad day and it makes me feel better knowing that he is always listening and won”t judge me no matter what. I feel like I relate to him now so much more by all of the things I have learned about him through the Apostle's Creed and the Lord's Prayer.

I believe that Jesus Christ, God's only Son our Lord, died for us and if he didn’t, we wouldn’t be living the way are today. Because I believe in him, he will take me to heaven one day.

I believe that the Holy Spirit lives within me and makes the story of Jesus known to me. I feel that the Holy Spirit lives in me by teaching me the way of the Gospel and bringing me to church, Sunday school, and confirmation.

I plan to nurture my faith by regularly attending church. I live differently now because I have a better understanding of my savior, Jesus Christ. God has changed my life for the better. I hope that in the future my faith will continue to grow as I read my bible, pray and worship. Thank you for being my church family. You have helped me a lot with my faith.

This year, the Pentecost story from Acts was illustrated by the presence of six hanging pieces of art, which represent the flames of the Holy Spirit.

We also decorated the sanctuary in red geraniums, as is our custom. Thanks to Gayle Bahlmann for organizing the purchase of these plants and arranging them so beautifully.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS UNDERWAY

This week, the Lansing ecumenical vacation bible school is going on at the United Methodist Church. The theme is Pandamania and there is a big group of kids from all the area churches. OBITUARY FOR PHYLLIS LARSEN

Phyllis Larsen was a member of the Lansing Laughter Club and periodic worship visitor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She is pictured (above) with her husband, Michael, at last year's Women of the ELCA picnic.

Phyllis Larsen, 62, of Ferryville, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Prairie Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien.

She was born in Boscobel, Wis. on June 4, 1948.

She was very active in the Gays Mills United Methodist church. Among her hobbies were fishing, enjoying the river, and cooking. For the past couple of years she and Michael have enjoyed Laughter Yoga at Lansing. They recently both completed Laughter Leader Training.

She is survived by her husband: Michael of Ferryville; 1 son: Raymond (Joanne) Gentz of Seattle; 1 daughter: Dr. Beth (Dave) Welter of Prairie du Chien; 4 grandchildren: Austin J. Gentz, Justin L. Gentz, Devin R. Gentz, and Raymond L. Gentz, Jr.; 4 step children: Jennifer Johnson of Galesville, Eric Larsen of Maple Lake, Minn., Jason Larsen of LaCrosse, and Craig Larsen of dodgeville; and 1 brother: Jerry A. Suetmeyer of park City, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her birth mother: Bessie Lee Faust; her adoptive parents: Lee and Beth Faust; and 1 brother Dean Suetmeyer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 27 at 11 AM at Gays Mills United Methodist Church. Pastor Lori Betz will officiate. Friends may call at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown on Thursday from 4 to 8 Pm, and on Friday at the church from 10 AM until service time.

HOLY HILARITY SUNDAY 2011

Each year, more and more Christian churches of various denominations all over the world are celebrating the Easter season in joyful ways. Urged on by the Fellowship of Merry Christians in the United States, churches like Our Savior's Lutheran are resurrecting old Christian customs from Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant traditions. One such custom—originating in Bavarian practice—has the faithful gathering back in church on Easter afternoon for a time of story-telling and practical joking. Early orthodox churches in gathered on the Monday after Easter to tell stories, jokes and anecdotes. To this day in Slavic regions, Christians gather after Easter for folk dancing and feasting in the churchyard.

This was a time of celebrating the big joke that God pulled on Satan by raising Christ from the dead—characterized by joking around, singing, dancing, and merry-making. The Latins call it Risus Paschalis , which is translated "God's Joke," or "the Easter Laugh." In the United States, it has come to be known as "Holy Hilarity Sunday" and is celebrated the Sunday after Easter.

Pastor Laura Gentry learned about this tradition by reading The Lutheran magazine in 2007 and decided that a church with a laughter club ought to give it a try. It was met with such enthusiasm, that it has become an annual tradition. On Sunday, May 1st, Our Savior's marked Holy Hilarity Sunday with their 5th festive worship celebration. Below are some pictures of the day, along with some of the jokes Pastor told in her sermon.

A mother and her little boy went into a religious library. While the mother was looking around, the little boy was busy looking at books too. He was fascinated with an old Bible, when suddenly he called out to her with an excited voice, "Mommy, look what I found!" She turned around and saw an old oak leaf had fallen out of the Bible. Someone had obviously pressed the leaf in the book. Her son continued, "This must be Adam's underwear!"

It was a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon while Moses, Jesus, and another guy were out playing golf. On the first tee-box, Moses pulls out his driver and blisters a shot up the right side of the fairway, rolling fast towards a water hazard. Moses quickly raised his club, parting the water while his ball rolls through to the other side safely.

Golf Ball Hole In OneNext up on the tee, Jesus hits a really long drive right towards the very same water hazard. His ball came to rest dead center of the pond, hovering just over the surface of the water. Jesus casually walks out onto the pond, and chips it up onto the green within a couple feet of the flagstick.

Not impressed, the third guy steps up to the tee without taking any time and just randomly whacks at the ball. Rightfully so, the ball is hit with a nasty hook that clears the left OB markers and goes over a fence into oncoming traffic. It bounces off a truck’s windshield hitting a nearby tree, bounces onto the roof of the greenkeeper’s shed, back out onto the fairway and towards the same pond that Moses and Jesus hit. Before it gets wet, the ball ricochets off a small rock and bounces onto a lily pad on over the water when a bullfrog jumped up and ate the ball. Right at that moment, a bald eagle swoops down and grabs the frog, flying away. As it flew over the green, the frog squeals with fright and drops the ball right next to the flagstick, taking one bounce and landing in the cup for an astounding hole in one.

In disgust, Moses then turns to Jesus and says, “I hate playing with your Dad.”

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut!"

The young man waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair...." To which his father replied, "Yes, and they walked every where they went!"

To start the worship service, the children released the "Alleluias," which had been hidden throughout the Lenten season. They discovered that the Alleluias had transformed into beautiful flowers and they put them on the cross to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.

Our Savior's Lutheran Church is organizing a day trip to Minneapolis to see the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Because it tells the story of the passion of Jesus, we'll be going during Holy Week on Wednesday, April 20th. The matinee show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres begins at 11:00 a.m. Tickets are $59 each, which includes lunch.

NEW MEMBER & ANNUAL MEETING

DEBUT OF NEW INTERIOR PAINT JOB

This fall, the interior of our church was repainted with new colors. The sanctuary, which now features red front walls and beige side walls, was painted by Kautman Painting of McGregor. Click pictures for a larger view.

The red walls really highlight our baby grand piano.

The fellowship hall was freshened up with two shades of blue and light green trim. This job was performed entirely by volunteers, which included Randy Bunn, Donna Reed, Pastor Laura Gentry, LaVern Timmerman Senior, Kerry Rathbun, and Wendy Morris. Thanks to all those who worked on this project.

The kitchen was also done by Kautman Painting. It has the same color scheme as the fellowship hall. New curtains were made and installed by Donna Reed.

We'd also like to thank the paint committee who selected the colors and oversaw the entire project: Donna Reed, Jean Meyer, Sharon Kiesau and Pastor Laura Gentry. All photographs on this blog were taken by William Gentry (www.thegentryjoint.com).

REFORMATION SUNDAY CELEBRATION

To help make our Reformation Sunday worship even more celebratory, assistant professor of music at Luther College, Richard Tirk, joined our church musician, Tom Bourcier, in playing hymns and providing special music. The two are pictured above.

During the course of the service, Mason James Darling, grandson of Daryl and Chris Bolson, received the sacrament of Holy Baptism. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS SUNDAY

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this is the 25th year of it being so, Our Savior's Lutheran Church held a Breast Cancer Awareness Sunday on October 24th.

We celebrated the 5 members of our church who are breast cancer survivors and prayed for continued health for them. There were also prayers for the cure to this disease that affects about 2.5 million Americans. Information about breast cancer was disseminated and each worshipers was given a pink breast cancer awareness with "faith, hope, love" printed on it.

On Wednesday evening, the Women of the ELCA hosted the annual church family picnic. This year it was held at the ballpark so the kids could be near the playground equipment and have lots of fun. Though the heat index was high, we managed to squeeze into the shade and have a lovely time.

PIANO DONATED TO CAMP EWALU

On Sunday, July 11th, Our Savior's Lutheran donated their upright Baldwin piano to Camp EWALU of Strawberry Point. Since this piano was replaced by the purchase of a Kawai baby grand in memory of Stacia Peterson, the church was able to give the Baldwin piano to this vital outdoor ministry of the ELCA.

Paul Little, Associate Director of Camp EWALU and three summer counselors from the camp helped lead worship on Sunday. In addition to playing camp music for the congregation, they shared about the importance of outdoor ministry.

Camp helps build skills necessary to prepare youth to assume roles as successful adults. Parents, campers, and camp staff report growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, making friends, exploring and learning new activities, and spirituality. Camp provides growth experiences for youth that can benefit them through adulthood.

In fact, recent studies show that kids who attend camp regularly are more likely to get involved and stay involved with churches when they become adults. Studies also show that there is a correlation between outdoor ministry and church leadership. About 85% of seminarians went to camp when they were children. So by sending kids to camp, Our Savior's is serving the wider church by forming tomorrow's congregations, pastors and lay leaders today.

The children and youth gathered around the piano to impart a special blessing upon it, that it may go on to do more exciting ministry. Following the service, some helpful men loaded the piano into the camp truck.

WE'VE GOT CAMP FEVER!

Our Savior's Lutheran has awarded 5 camp scholarships for outstanding Sunday school attendance this year. The scholarship recipients are: Mason Libke, Alanna Pleasants, Emilio Rathbun, Jazmine Rathbun and Louis Nguyen.

Jazmine and Emilo attended Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Ferryville, Wisconsin in June. Mason and Alanna also went to Sugar Creek. They attended in July.

Today on Pentecost Sunday, two young people in our congregation affirmed their baptism through the rite of confirmation. The confirmands, Mason Libke and Ellicha Gage, are pictured with Pastor Laura Gentry above.

Below are their personally written faith statements, which they read to the congregation during worship.

MASON’S FAITH STATEMENT

It is hard to believe that I am finally getting confirmed. I was baptized in this church as a small child and here I am—already 14 years old!

I really enjoy anything to with sports or anything active that will get my heart pumping. The best way to describe myself is that I try to get along with everyone. I don't really care what people think about me. My motto is to be true to myself as well as others. I think I've gained this confidence through my involvement here.

My family started coming here when I was a pretty little guy. I grew with the church. I'm sure you all remember the time when I told Pastor during the children's sermon that I thought there was a chicken's foot on the Christmas tree! Or maybe even the time when I was the monkey on the piano bench in our Christmas program. I was always the one who got the laughs whenever the children's choir performed. I have a made lot of great memories here with you all.

Most importantly, my faith in God—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit—has grown. So on this important day as I affirm my faith, I'd like to tell you what I have come to believe.

I believe in God the Father. He made me and everything that exists. He gives me all I need—a family, friends, food, shelter and lots of great pets. I want to always be thankful for the things God the Father has given me.

I believe in Jesus Christ. He is God's son and my Savior. He died and gave his life for us. I believe he was a great leader and teacher and he relates to me through faith and prayer.

I believe the Holy Spirit lives within me and in every single person in my community because you are all great people. I also believe the Spirit lives within us through faith, courage, and wisdom. I know that the Spirit will be with me throughout my whole life and that makes me glad.

I believe I live differently now. I have been going to Sunday School and Confirmation for 7 years now. I've learned that God will always love me. I believe God has changed my life in a positive way because I really enjoy going to Sugar Creek Bible camp. By going to camp I can meet new friends and have my faith grow. By the way, thanks for all those camp scholarships. It really has changed my life! I believe my faith will help me in the future by staying active in the church.

I would like to thank you all here today for supporting me through the years I have been here and motivating me to go all the way just so I can be standing where I am now. I would like to make a special thanks to my teachers: Pastor, Jamie, Lavern, Wendy, and my mom for all the extra support and helping me grow in faith. Most of all, I want to thank God for loving me and guiding me to this church where I could come to know this love so fully.

ELLICHA’S FAITH STATEMENT

I am Ellicha Gage. I am 14 years old. I love to swim, sing, do gymnastics and hang out with my family and friends. I would describe myself as an energetic person. I am always upbeat and on-the-go. I am also a member of the Lansing Laughter Club.

Two years ago, I came to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church out of my own will. Pastor Laura talked to my mom and my mom said it would be a good thing for me. This has helped my faith because I’ve learned many stories from the bible, the Apostle’s Creed and the Ten Commandments and many other things too.

I learned how God created you and me. He even created the world. Because we are created in God’s image, we all look like God and to me, that is a wonderful thing! I am so glad.

I also learned about Jesus. I relate to him in many ways because he was not only God’s son, but he was also truly human. Because of this, I think he understands what we go through with all the hard times we’ve had. Perhaps we can even understand what he went through when he suffered and died on the cross for us.

God’s Spirit, I learned, is always with me, you and everybody. I believe the Holy Spirit is following me and guiding me in my life. It is what gives me wisdom and direction when I need it most.

Now that I have learned about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I think differently. My faith is stronger beacuse I know that God is with me. God has changed my life. Now that I understand he is with me wherever I go day or night, I have confidence.

I am glad to be affirming my baptism today through confirmation. God adopted me into the family when I was baptized as a baby and now I am able to say yes to that adoption. I don’t know what God has in store for me in the future, but I hope it is good and great things will come out of it.

I would like to thank the church for everything, especially for giving me a full scholarship to go to Camp EWALU last summer. It was amazing. This year, I am going again and I hope it will be like last year without swamping the canoe.

BOURCIER WINS BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is proud to announce that our church musician, Tom Bourcier, is the recipient of the Iowa Motion Picture Association Award for Excellence for Best Original Music Score for his work on the film “Rebirth,” directed by Francesca Soans. The winners were announced at the annual Iowa Motion Picture Awards ceremony on May 1, 2010 at the Downtown Des Moines Holiday Inn.

The IMPA competition features two levels of recognition: awards of achievement and awards of excellence. Awards of excellence go to the highest scoring nominees in class.

More than 140 entries from all areas of the state were received and judged in categories ranging from screenwriting and acting to editing and directing.

The IMPA is a professional organization that works to promote and enhance the talents and skills of Iowa’s film, video and multimedia production community.

“Rebirth” is a 30-minute fiction film, written and directed by Soans and shot on digital video. The film explores the stories of three women: Kalpa, an Indian immigrant; Helen, a Norwegian-American; and Laura, a Mexican-American. The film provides a complex look at race, religion, and politics in a small town in Iowa.

Bourcier holds the master of music degree in composition from Western Michigan University. He teaches at Luther College and has been the church musician at Our Savior’s since February of 2009. He has played two fundraising concerts at the church.

OBITUARY FOR DONNA THRAN

Donna A. Thran, 70, of Lansing, IA, formerly of Cedar Falls, IA, died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at her home in Lansing. Visitation and a time to greet her family will be held Monday, March 29th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:00 am at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Lansing. Any memorials will be directed to Prairie du Chien Hospice in Prairie du Chien, WI.

Donna Ann (Price) Thran was born on January 19, 1940 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Donald C. and Isadora B. (Schmidt) Price. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School. On September 20, 1958 she married Don W. Thran at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Together, Donna and Don owned and operated Don’s TV Maximum Sight and Sound, an electronics sales and service outlet in Waterloo, for many years. Over the years they visited their cabin in Lansing often, until 10 years ago when they built a home on the site and moved there permanently.

While living in Cedar Falls, Donna was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and its women’s prayer group, the Girl Scouts of America, Valley Park PTA, and BPW professional women’s group. Since moving to Lansing she has been very active at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, serving as church treasurer, singing in the choir, and taking part in the women’s prayer group, ladies circle, and laughter club.

Donna was an active person and liked to keep busy. She exercised often, enjoying biking, cross country skiing, and aerobics. Boating, fishing, gardening, raising flowers, and working crossword and computer puzzles were some of her other favorite pastimes. More than anything she enjoyed people and looked forward to any chance to get together with her family or close friends.

Survivors include her husband, Don Thran of Lansing; her children, Darrin C. Thran of Lansing, Eric D. (Stacy) Thran of Grundy Center, IA, Teri D. (Craig) Machholz of Monticello, MN, and Nicole M. (Edward) Fisher of Peosta, IA; 11 grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Kortney, Tyler, Derrick, Drake, Taitlyn, Mason, Dylan, Carson, and Olivia; and a sister, Rajean Owens of Denver, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents.

FORGIVENESS TRAINING WORKSHOP TO BEGIN

As a Lenten opportunity for spiritual growth, Our Savior's Lutheran will be offering a 6-week forgiveness training workshop. These sessions will be held at 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday night from February 24-March 31. The meetings will last approximately an hour. The photo above was taken at the forgiveness leader training workshop held at Luther College in January. There, Pastor Laura Gentry studied with Christian psychologist, Everett Worthington.

Do you want to become a more forgiving person?

What?

A 6-session group is being formed that will help you develop a more forgiving character. In the group you will discuss what the Bible says about forgiving and you will learn a method for forgiving a particular transgression. By praying, practicing the method, reflecting on it alone and with others in the the group, you will become a more forgiving person as the Lord builds a forgiving attitude, forgiving skills, and a supportive community.

Who?

This is for people who want to learn to become a more forgiving Christian. They are willing to do this by learning and practicing a Christian method of forgiving that has been and used and studied for years by Christian psychologist, Everett Worthington.

How?

We best learn to forgiving by seeking the heart of God. As we discern God's heart, Jesus' sacrifice and the Holy Spirit's leading, we become more eager to forgive transgressions. To aid us, we learn a method of forgiving a particular transgression. Then, we apply those skills to other hurts and offenses. We learn to forgive others, and we can apply this same method to forgiving ourselves. This method works best if you work on a hurt that you have tried repeatedl to forgive. Despite your efforts, you might have granted forgiveness but the peace and the emotional experience of forgiveness has eluded you.

When?

The group will meet for six sessions on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. It is requested that you attend all sessions, or the learning experience will be incomplete.

This method, developed by Everett Worthington (pictured above) and his colleagues, has been studied and proven effective. Many thousands of people have gone through this training and have become more forgiving people—more healthy, happy and at peace with God. You are invited to attend and experience the joy of forgiveness too.

CHURCH COUNCIL PRESENTS A CHECK TO THE GIVING TREE

On January 27th, members of the church council and pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lansing presented a check for $1,000 to Angie Coltsch for “The Giving Tree” ministry. This local outreach is administered by the Lansing United Methodist Church under Coltsch’s leadership.

They money was raised primarily through a jazz concert called "Jazzed about Christmas,"on December 20th. Tom Bourcier, our musician, performed the concert on the new baby grand piano for a large crowd. It was professionally recorded live by Brett Huus of Soundstrations studio in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

CHURCH MOURNS THE LOSS OF BEN LARSON

After the Haiti earthquake, word came initially that the Wartburg Theological Seminary students ministering there during the January term were safe.

Then, we learned that that report was wrong.

Pastors April and Judd Larson of Duluth, Minn., shared with others that their 25-year-old son Ben was dead.

When the earthquake hit, Ben Larson's wife, Renee Splichal Larson, and his cousin, Jonathan Larson, were in the same building as Ben. Renee and Jonathan "made it out, eventually found each other, then returned to St. Joseph Guest House in the attempt to rescue Ben, to no avail," Duane Larson wrote in a Jan. 14 letter to the Wartburg community.

Jonathan and Renee are being evacuated to the Dominican Republic, and "we're hoping that they will soon travel back to the United States," Duane Larson told the ELCA News Service.

Ben, Renee and Jonathan are fourth-year Wartburg seminarians certified for ordination. They traveled together to Haiti to help with the new Haiti Lutheran Church. Ben was teaching at the Pastors and Lay Leaders Theological Conference in Haiti.

"We so grieve with (Ben's) parents, April and Judd; for Renee's loss of her husband; Jonathan's loss of a dear cousin, for our loss of a beautiful friend," wrote Duane Larson. "Ben's baptismal light burned so brightly in our community and for all who came to know him. We

grieve the loss of so clear a proclamation, with eyes twinkling, of Christ's love, compassion and humor," he wrote.

Ben's mother, the Rev. April Ulring Larson, originally from Decorah, is pastor at First Lutheran Church, Duluth, Minn., and former bishop of the ELCA La Crosse Area Synod. His father, the Rev. Judd W. Larson, is a retired ELCA pastor. Both were formerly pastors at the Old East and West Paint Creek churches in Waterville. Ben is the youngest of the 4 Larson children.

Ben was a graduate of Luther College. During his college years, he worked at Sugar Creek Bible Camp. Pastor Laura first me him there and invited him to become the church musician for Our Savior’s Lutheran in 2005. He and his friend Marcos Grano de Oro from the Dominican Republic, then led music for worship for that entire school year. Their music and worship leadership was greatly appreciated by our congregation. Some in the congregation remembered meeting Ben as a child when his parents were pastors in Waterville.

Ben's parents, the issued the following statement on Jan. 14, 2010:

As an infant Benjamin Judd Ulring Splichal Larson was wrapped in the arms of God in the waters of baptism, and from those waters, his life was an outpouring of love and joy, laughter and play, in response to God first loving Ben.

Ben’s love of God, walking in accompaniment, passionately loving others, listening and learning from those who are poor across the globe, drove his serving.

We give thanks to God for the incredible joy of knowing Ben. His laughter, playfulness, passionate heart for those who are hurting was manifest in his daily life. He delighted in the privilege of serving and knowing God, laying out his life in joy.

We are blessed by still being able to hear Ben‘s music. His father Judd says, “If you want to know Ben, go to his music.“ In his tender music remains some of the treasure that is Ben: what he believes, what he cares about, his deepest soul.

Most of the people who died in this deadly earthquake in Haiti are the poorest of the poor in this hemisphere. Ben went to Haiti to teach theology and scripture in the new Lutheran Church of Haiti; but more deeply to learn from these people loved by God. In his young death his life joins the bodies of the poor. In the Haitian rubble Ben’s life joins these dear beloved people of God: all those parents crying for their children; young widows calling out for their husbands; new orphans searching for their parents.

God have mercy on us.

"We hold Renee, April, Judd, Jonathan and all of Ben's family and friends in prayer, trusting in God's mercy and the promise of the Resurrection," said the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop. "Our prayers are with the people of Haiti, and their families and friends throughout the world."

This is a deep loss for Ben’s family and circle of friends, for the Luther College community, the Wartburg Seminary community, and indeed, the entire ELCA. News reports of Larson’s death have circulated around the country.

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

The Situation:
On January 12 at 4:53 p.m., a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti, primarily impacting its capital of Port-au-Prince and its nearly two million residents. It is believed that over three million citizens of Haiti are affected. The epicenter of the quake was centered approximately 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince. Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. Over 30 aftershocks ranging from 4.2 to 5.9 have already been recorded.

The city is without electricity and the telephone network has been overloaded with calls making it impossible to reach friends and family.

The presidential palace is in ruins and many churches have been destroyed. Hospitals that were not directly impacted by the quake are overflowing and the search for survivors is intense. Already one of the poorest countries in the world, this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty.

ELCA Response:
The ELCA, through the Lutheran World Federation, is already responding to the critical needs of survivors in Haiti. Thankfully, the LWF offices and staff on the island were spared in the earthquake, making it possible for work to begin immediately. Staff there will focus their immediate efforts on issues of water safety and sanitation, assisting with medical triage, and providing emergency sheltering for the many who are now homeless. The ELCA has long-standing relationships in Haiti through several organizations and the Lutheran Church in Haiti.
In anticipation of your generous gifts, ELCA Disaster Response has authorized $250,000 for immediate relief assistance in Haiti, with the possibility for an additional $500,000 as the full scope of this disaster continues to become clear. Your gifts are needed now to make this type of rapid response possible.
While volunteers, especially skilled workers, will likely be needed in the coming months, the situation on the ground is still far too chaotic – no water, no power, few roads, and very limited communication – to support volunteers traveling to the area in the immediate days.

CHRISTMAS JAZZ CONCERT RAISES FUNDS

Our Savior's Lutheran Church's worship musician, Tom Bourcier, performed a jazz concert called "Jazzed about Christmas" on December 20th. This concert raised needed funds for The Giving Tree, a Lansing outreach ministry operated through the Lansing United Methodist Church. Read more about this ministry.

A large crowd gathered for the concert of the celebrated jazz pianist, which was professionally recorded live by Brett Huus of Soundstrations studio in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

A LAUGHING CHRISTMAS

The Sunday School Christmas Pageant, A Laughing Christmas, was presented during worship on Sunday, December 20th. A marvelously large group of 25 children were involved. They are pictured above—double click the photo to see an enlargement.

The original pageant was written by Pastor Laura Gentry. It presented the Christmas story in a joyful way with lots of laughter. Below are photos taken by Pastor and her father, Burnell Smith.
